A Celebration of Frigga

Frigga is the wife of Odin and the Queen of the Aesir. In general, she is thought of as the Goddess of home, marriage, and the family. She is known for wisdom, compassion, and a tendency toward motherly protection.

If you have a home and family, you may want to consider a blot to give thanks for those blessings. You may also want to stay on Her good side if you were going to ask Her protection for that family, though honestly She tends to look after kids when She can. If, however, you do not have such relationships, you may want to make Her acquaintance to ask for guidance in finding an appropriate partner to get started.

If you are going to perform a blot for Frigga, there are a few things you can do to make it seem "more appropriate". As with any of the Gods, They will understand if you can't get it all perfect; it's the intention and respect that counts.

First, clean your domestic environment as best you can. Make sure the dishes are done and the laundry is at least in the hamper. If your situation is not so equipped, maybe you can just straighten your sleeping bag, clean the fast food wrappers from the floorboard, or straighten your cardboard box. That last part isn't meant to be flippant, but it is just there to illustrate the point that you do the best you can with what you have.

Set up an altar, again to the best of your ability. Items associated with Frigga include the color green, the number nine, tools associated with domestic work (brooms, pots, etc.), and tools related to textiles (distaffs, drop spindles, and spinning wheels). If you have a family, include something that represents the family, possibly a group photo. If you are still seeking, consider placing one or more objects that represent love and marriage to you.

If possible, include candles and incense. Sandalwood or lavender are nice, but use what you have. The candles represent the light and guidance one gets from Frigga. The incense helps set the mood, clear the air, and will be inviting.

The next part is the offerings. Most blots include food and drink, placed in a bowl and then later taken to a natural place to complete the offering. You can also think of other items, but try to connect them to marriage and family. If you have children, include them in this, allowing them to make their own contribution. Again, do your best. If all you have for an offering is a twig you chewed into an interesting shape, as long as it is offered with respect, it will be ok.

The rest of this will be split into two parts. The first part is for those who have a family already, and the second for those still working. Both are similar, but there will be a little variation in the wording. As with all blots you find on the Internet, this is not an absolute thing and you can make up your own. This is only a suggestion.

Persons in a Family

Stand before the altar and face north (if you can). Call to Her to invite Her into your space. "Hail, Frigga, Queen of the Aesir, Lady of Love and Marriage. We call upon you this day to bless our bonds and our homes."

At this point, you pour the mead, food, or other offerings on the altar, usually in a bowl intended for that purpose.

For the next part, speak from your heart, expressing gratitude for your marriage and family. Ask Frigga for Her blessings, protection, and guidance. Sample the offerings and share them with your loved ones.

If you have children, consider letting them make a small prayer. You may want to rehearse it ahead of time so they know what to expect and are not caught off guard. Later, after the blot, have a positive talk about the experience, including having them tell you what they felt.

This should be followed by meditation. Have everyone present take part. Sit in quiet contemplation, focusing on Frigga's presence. Visualize Her blessing your marriage and family.

With this complete, it is time to close the blot. Thank Frigga for her attention and blessings, and be sincere. Extinguish the candles. Leave the offerings. Later, someone can take them outside to complete the offering sequence, just be sure to adhere to local ordinances.

Persons Still Working Toward a Family

This blot will be similar to the other in many ways. Start by standing before the altar and facing north. This is when you invoke Frigga, inviting Her into your space. You can say something like, "Hail, Frigga, Queen of the Aesir, Lady of Love and Marriage. We call upon you this day to guide us on our journey toward love, companionship, and family."

Pour the mead, food, and other offerings on the altar or in a bowl intended for that purpose. If available, present flowers to Frigga as symbols of beauty and hope.

At this point, you must speak from your own heart to ask Frigga for Her guidance and blessings as you try to find a partner, family, or whatever you're looking for. This can be tough, because you cannot be honest with Her until you are honest with yourself.

With that done, spend a minute or two in meditation. You can try to visualize yourself finding love and happiness. At the same time, try to listen to see if there are any words of wisdom coming from elsewhere. This is not a time to be stubborn or self centered. Be mindful that finding love can be a long journey and is not just about finding someone else, but figuring yourself out as well.

With the meditation complete, thank Frigga for Her time and attention. Express that you have a goal to be a healthy partner for whomever you find, that you will do your best to be worthy of Frigga's blessings. Then, extinguish the candles. Leave the offerings in a bowl for a while until they can be taken outside for completion of the offering, according to local regulations.

Wrapping Up

One must always keep in mind that Frigga is extremely wise and is known to be able to see through our secrets. That includes seeing the things we keep from ourselves. If She decides you need a rough lesson, it won't be as harsh as one of Odin's, but it will still be filled with tough love.

Part of finding a relationship and making it work is being realistic about who you are and who would really be a good fit. Healthy families are built on partnership and filled with trust and respect. It is possible that Frigga may help you find more about yourself so you can move closer to one of those relationships.
